About the Hospital
The Senior Medical Officer (SMO) team currently comprises three experienced locally based consultant Ophthalmologists and two visiting consultant ophthalmologists. You would be the sixth senior ophthalmologist working in the service. The wider eye service includes two registrars (one RANZCO vocational trainee), a visiting fellow, ophthalmic clinic nurses (incl. extended practice roles), an orthoptist, ophthalmic technicians, visiting optometrists and a house officer (shared with ENT service). The service provides specialist outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology services, and primary health care support.
Technologically the service is well resourced with HD-OCT, OCT-angiography, FFA, ICG, pattern scanning conventional and sub-threshold retinal laser, YAG laser, Selective Laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), Subthreshold/micro pulse cyclodiode laser, Centurion phacoemulsification, and DOC posterior vitrectomy equipment.
Our hospital employs more than 2500 staff at Manawatu, Palmerston North, Tararua and Horowhenua, and Otaki districts. Our Hospital is a 350-bed secondary hospital, which services an urban population of 80,000 and a total population catchment of 168,000. In addition, the hospital is a teaching hospital and is associated with both Auckland and Otago medical schools.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be eligible for vocational registration in Ophthalmology with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Have demonstrated clinical, management, and teaching skills
- Ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
Location
Palmerston North is a city on New Zealand's North Island. In the center, the New Zealand Rugby Museum displays sporting memorabilia, including vintage All Blacks uniforms. Next door is the Te Manawa art, science, and history museum. Adjacent to the Manawatu River, Victoria Esplanade is a sprawling park with a duck pond and rose gardens. Just outside the city is Manawatu Gorge, with forested hills and native bushland.
