Purpose of position
Haemophilia Treatment Centres are referral services offering comprehensive care for adults and children with Haemophilia and other related bleeding disorders. As an integral member of the comprehensive care team dealing with a rare, high cost, multifaceted illness the haemophilia nurse specialist fosters autonomy and independence of the patients through education and clinical support in managing their own health whilst, addressing a full range of long term needs. The haemophilia nurse will take a leadership role in the coordination, review and documentation of strategic planning activities, treatment product management, data collection and service performance review. An essential element of this role is the ability to establish and maintain long-term therapeutic relationships to enable effective communication. The core values of patient-centred care, trust and respect are evident in all interactions with patients’ carers and colleagues. The Haemophilia nurse specialist role requires working closely with other members of the specialist multi-disciplinary team to achieve the best possible outcomes for adults and children with inherited bleeding disorders.
Service description
Haemophilia is a hereditary genetic disorder that impairs the body's ability to control blood clotting. This is a chronic genetic disease condition with no cure. The Haemophilia Centre sits under the Cancer and Blood Directorate and covers both adults and paediatrics with inherited bleeding disorders for the Northern Region. The National Haemophilia Management Group (NHMG) manages the funding for Haemophilia services across the country on behalf of the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Education and Qualifications
- New Zealand nursing registration
- Postgraduate certificate / diploma in specialty nursing practice.
- Working towards completion of Masters degree in nursing or health related area.
Experience / Knowledge
Ideally we are looking for nurses who have already obtained their Level 4 practice expertise as a minimum along with an in-depth knowledge and experience of Haematology/Haemophilia. A Masters or a Post – Graduate Diploma would be an advantage. Excellent communication skills and problem solving skills are required. The ability to communicate effectively with and between all health care professionals involved in the patient journey is essential.
