District Health Board Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) serves the central population of adults over 65 experiencing acute mental illness or behavioural or psychological difficulties associated with dementia. There are two distinct teams within MHSOP with an integrated service delivery approach.
The Fraser McDonald Unit is a 15 bed acute admission unit incorporating a high care area.
The Community Mental Health Team serves the same age group and works with service users from acute crisis through to continuing care with integrated Maori and Pacifica Services.
Here's a rare opportunity for a Registered Mental Health Nurse to join our stable in-patient team working rotating 24 hour shifts - so no day is ever the same! You must be a registered nurse with specialisation in Mental Health with a current practicing certificate.

A full clean driver’s licence is essential as are basic computing skills.
This is a permanent, Full Time position (1 FTE) working 40 hours a week.

To meet the needs of service users and their family / whanau using contemporary nursing care which is safe, appropriate and effective. The care is based on comprehensive nursing assessment and management, ensures continuity, and service user centred, culturally sensitive and evidence-based.
Service Description:
The Fraser McDonald Unit on the Hospital site is a 15 bed unit incorporating a high care area serving the Central Auckland population of adults over 65. It is a 24 hr service that provides specialist assessment, treatment and diagnosis to people experiencing acute mental illness or behavioural difficulties associated with dementia. The team comprises Registered Nurses, Consultant Psychiatrist, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Clinical Psychologist, Physiotherapist, a Nurse Educator (working across the inpatient and community teams), Health Care Assistants, Registrar and House Officer. Fraser MacDonald Unit is part of the ADHB Mental Health Service For Older People (MHSOP) and works closely with the MHSOP Community Team and family/ whanau to help provide the best possible outcome and future care.
Essential:
- Registration with New Zealand Nursing Council
- Current Annual Practising Certificate (APC)
- Post graduate certificate in mental health nursing
- Drivers Licence, able to drive a manual car.
Desired / Education Work Experience:
- Post graduate Mental Health qualification
- L2 nursing PDRP or willing to work towards this
- Basic and intermediate computing skills
- Education & Qualifications RCPN, or RPN or RMN
- Minimum two year experience as a mental health nurse
