POSITION DETAILS: LabPLUS Phlebotomist
TITLE: Technical Head/Technical Specialist/ Section Supervisors
REPORTS TO: Auckland City Hospital/Starship Children’s Health, Greenlane Clinical Centre, Refugee Health Centre, ADHB Outrpatient Clinics

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To provide a quality service to health professionals and patients, through the collection of specimens as requested and transport preparation for dispatch to the LabPLUS laboratory. To ensure a professional customer service link between health professionals and patients and the LabPLUS laboratory. Perform venepunctures, skin punctures and other relevant specimen collection competently and expediently. Have knowledge of test requirements. Have knowledge of best practice in phlebotomy, including specimen integrity and stability aspects.
PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY COLLECTION RELATED TASKS
Collect correct samples from positively identified patients (including but not limited to older persons, children, babies) in accordance with departmental protocols and policies in a complex environment at a variety of locations, including in a hospital setting and outpatient clinics. • Perform and comply with appropriate infection control and hand hygiene actions for all collects.
Ensure an auditable trail of all testing to a high level of accuracy. Greet patients, obtain information pertinent to phlebotomy collection, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation. Ability to remain focused and productive in stressful situations and to deal effectively and diplomatically with patients, families and healthcare providers. Superior customer service skills and excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Manage workload efficiently and effectively under the supervision of Section Supervisors, the Technical Specialist and the Technical Head, including the ability to prioritise to avoid delays for patients, healthcare providers, testing and reporting of results
PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY TEST-RELATED TASKS
Specimen dispatch and transportation preparation of samples from satellite locations to the central LabPLUS laboratory hub. Familiarity with NZBS specimen collection and labelling requirements. Assist in maintaining all appropriate logs, stat sheets and task sheets according to requirements. Ensure an adequate level of supplies based on anticipated needs, ensure that work areas
are stocked and use appropriate supplies with minimal waste. Ensure required read lists in MediaLab are up-to-date at all times.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Ensure safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards. Ensure safety of self and others and maintenance of safe environments and equipment used in the Phlebotomy department. appropriate timely action to manage any incidents or near misses. Report immediately any accidents or incidents involving patients, self or other staff members to senior staff members. Take reasonable care to protect own safety, health and welfare and that of any other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work. Treat all samples as potentially infectious. Have an in-depth knowledge of hand hygiene procedures and practice these at all times for all collections. Follow isolation policies and procedures where relevant.
SELF DEVELOPMENT/SELF MANAGEMENT
Participate in and maintain LabPLUS mandatory training requirements. Establish and work towards achieving annual goals/objectives as part of annual performance appraisals. Keep continuing professional development activities to at least the level required to maintain an annual APC. • Monitor and keep current with developments within the practice of phlebotomy and related healthcare, to ensure the maintenance of knowledge and skill base in order to facilitate contemporary professional practice.
Capability to manage multiple priorities in a high volume complex setting. Maintain annual leave balance following LabPLUS guidelines. Attend educational opportunities/conferences relevant to the scope of practice. Provide proper notification and advance notice of absences in accordance with ADHB policies. Report to work punctually each day and after lunch and break periods where applicable. Maintain a well-groomed appropriate appearance according to departmental and ADHB dress code, appearing neat and clean at all times • Attend staff meetings where possible and if unable to attend reads minutes. Make every effort to .limit use and disclosure of confidential information to the minimum necessary to perform the job and ensure confidential record
